Queensland’s climate is hard on outdoor surfaces — intense UV, sudden downpours, and afternoons that can push exposed surfaces uncomfortably hot underfoot. Here’s what actually separates a good outdoor tile choice from one you’ll regret by next summer.
UV stability — porcelain doesn’t fade
Full-body porcelain is coloured and fired the same way all the way through, so it won’t bleach or fade in direct Queensland sun the way some concrete pavers and painted surfaces can over a few summers. If you’re tiling a north-facing alfresco or an exposed pool deck, this matters more here than almost anywhere else in Australia.
Colour and heat underfoot
Darker tiles absorb more heat and can get genuinely hot underfoot on a 35-degree Brisbane afternoon — worth considering for pool surrounds and anywhere bare feet will be walking. Lighter travertine-look and concrete-look porcelain in pale tones stay noticeably cooler than charcoal or black finishes.
Slip rating for wet, bare feet
Outdoor areas that get wet — pool surrounds, alfresco zones exposed to rain — should be rated P4 or P5. See our full slip ratings guide for how the rating system works.
Thickness and how the tile is laid
Outdoor porcelain is typically supplied in a thicker 20mm format for pavers laid over sand, gravel or grass with minimal substrate work, versus a standard 10mm indoor tile fixed to a solid slab. Many of our large format ranges — including Travertini — come in matching indoor (10mm) and outdoor (20mm) finishes, so you can run the same look from your living room straight out to the patio without a visual break at the door.
Drainage falls are not optional
Queensland’s storm season means outdoor tiled areas need a proper fall to drain — usually built into the screed below the tile, not the tile itself. Get this checked at the substrate stage; it’s much harder to fix after the tiles are down.
Popular Queensland outdoor choices
- Travertine look — warm, pale tones that stay cool and suit the classic Queenslander-meets-modern look.
- Stone look — natural tonal variation that hides dust, leaves and everyday outdoor wear well.
- Concrete look — a clean, contemporary finish for modern alfresco and pool areas.
Frequently asked questions
Do outdoor tiles get hot in Queensland summer?
Darker colours can get uncomfortably hot underfoot in direct sun. Choosing a lighter tone in the same range keeps the surface noticeably cooler while still matching your indoor tiles.
What slip rating is safe for a pool deck?
P4 or P5 for the pool surround and any area that regularly gets wet. See our slip ratings explained guide for the full breakdown.
Can I use the same tile indoors and outdoors?
Often yes — many ranges come in a matching indoor 10mm finish and an outdoor 20mm finish in the same colour, giving a seamless indoor-outdoor look. Ask our team which of our ranges have a matching outdoor format.
Do outdoor porcelain tiles fade in the sun?
No — full-body porcelain is coloured through its full thickness and fired at high temperature, so UV exposure doesn’t bleach or fade it the way it can affect some coatings and concrete products.
